Hiding Your Smoking from The Insurance Company

Written by Mitchel Jaynes

When you apply for life insurance coverage, the company is going to look at dozens of different factors when they are deciding how much to charge you every month.

They are going to review everything from your health to your hobbies. All of the different areas are going to impact your premiums, but one of the categories is if you use any tobacco.

If you’re listed as a smoker on your insurance application, then you’re going to be facing much higher premiums for your insurance plan, period.

Smokers are at a much higher risk for a health condition, like a heart attack or lung cancer. Because smokers are at an increased risk for these problems, they will pose a much higher risk to the insurance company for coverage.

This increased risk is going to translate to higher monthly premiums. In fact, smokers are going to pay at least twice as much for their insurance policy versus what a non-smoker is going to pay for the same sized plan.

At LifeInsuranceForSmokers.com, we get a lot of questions about the application and medical exam process.

One of the questions that we get most often is about lying or trying to hide your cigarette habit when you apply for a policy. We (highly) suggest refraining from doing so.

Can You Really Hide Your Smoking From The Insurance Company?

After you complete the initial paperwork for the insurance plan, the company is going to require you to take a medical exam (unless you buy a no exam plan), and the results of the medical exam are going to play a significant role in how much you pay for your coverage. During the medical exam is when they are going to look to see if you are a smoker.

There are several ways that they can do it, but the most common is to take a urine sample.

With the urine sample they can look for several different traces of tobacco, and if they find any, you’re going to get smoker’s rates. If you’re trying to avoid those expensive smoker’s rates, you might be wondering if there is any way you can hide your smoking during the medical exam.

You can try lying on the application when they ask if you’re a smoker, but it’s not a good idea.

During the medical exam, they are going to see traces of the nicotine, and then you’re going to get higher premiums, anyway. Lying to the agent is only going to slow the process down because you’re going to be caught anyway.

What About Cigar Smokers?

We also get a lot of questions about applicants who only smoke cigars on special occasions.

Each insurance company is going to view cigar smokers differently. If you’re a cigar smoker, it’s important you find a company who is going to view your smoking more favorably.

There are a lot of companies on the market who will allow you to smoke around 12 cigars every year.

As long as you stay under the threshold, you’ll still be able to secure non-smoker’s rates for your life insurance plan. On the other hand, if you smoke several cigars a month, celebratory or not, then you’re going to be required to pay the expensive premiums for a smoker.

Working With An Independent Insurance Agent

If you’re a smoker, cigars or cigarettes, one of the best ways you can ensure you’re getting the best plan is to work with an independent insurance agent.

Unlike a traditional insurance agent, independent agents work with dozens of highly rated companies across the nation. With an ordinary life insurance, they can only give you the single rate from the one company, but independent agents can bring you the best policies from several companies at once.

Every insurance company is going to give you different rates for smokers based on their medical underwriting and rating system. You could receive two drastically differing rates for the same sized plans.

Instead of wasting your precious time calling all of those companies, let one of our experienced agents do all of the hard work for you.

At LifeInsuranceForSmokers.com, it’s our mission to ensure  you’re getting the perfect life insurance policy for your family. We know shopping for life insurance is not a fun experience, but it’s why we are here to help.
